DeUnna Hendrix, former head coach at Miami of Ohio
Ever wonder what goes on inside the mind of a coach when they deem it perfectly acceptable and normal to engage in an off-the-court relationship with one of their players? Well, today's tale brings us to the intriguing case of DeUnna Hendrix, the head coach of Miami of Ohio. In a rather scandalous turn of events in April 2023, it was unveiled that Hendrix had tendered her resignation due to the discovery of intimate text messages that revealed her involvement with one of her players. The identity of said player remains a mystery, for now at least.
Now, this situation is undeniably repugnant for multiple reasons. But let's not ignore the hilarity that lurks within. I can't help but ponder what on earth the player said or did to entice the coach into thinking they were suitable relationship material. Was it their impeccable ability to follow instructions on the court? The way she dribbled up and down the court?
On the flip side, what was it about the coach that drew the player in? Was it her uncanny talent for leading her team to a subpar season? Or maybe it was her commanding presence on the court that worked like a magnet? WHAT WAS IT?!
Let’s dig into the text messages. As various news sources have reported, text exchanges included verbiage around “I love you”, “You’re my baby” and “I. Can’t. Wait. To. Squeeze. You”. I sure hope the player sent that last text because that is juvenile formatting. Supposedly there are a total of 180 text messages sent between the 2 across an 11-day period. The stereotypes are true. 👀👩🏽🤝👩🏻🌈

Hendrix’s resignation reads, “I want to thank Miami University and its administration for allowing me to lead this program for the last four years,” Hendrix said in a statement. “I can’t express the amount of gratitude I have for this prestigious institution and its leadership. I also want to thank the Oxford community for the continual love and support. I look forward to the next phase of my career and continue rooting for the RedHawks.”
Hendrix's track record at Miami was far from impressive, with a dismal 35-80 record over her four-year tenure. Frankly, that's pure mediocrity. So not only was she an underwhelming coach, but now we understand what had her so preoccupied. Instead of burning the midnight oil studying opponents' strategies, she was busy concocting her own escape plan with an 18-year-old player. Misplaced priorities.
When Hendrix resigned, she requested that the university refrain from disclosing the reason behind her departure, all in an effort to avoid hindering her prospects at future institutions. I suppose she wanted to tantalize her girlfriend/player by witnessing which other unsuspecting players would be foolish enough to fall into her rather perverse trap.
