  • Diet culture

Left to Right: NBA Young Boy, Lil’ Wayne, and Flau’jae Johnson

Pop Culture has the potential to shift women’s college basketball

How many people have been cancelled recently for getting caught saying the N word in a rap song? A lot of people. Now, what happens if you have all of those white people now rapping the names of college players?

Hear me out

With Flau’jae Johnson on the rise to replace Cardi B, women’s basketball has a new avenue to attract a new following to the sport. Ever since the National Championship game, Flau’jae has been signed to a record label, is in talks to collab with your favorite artists such as Lil’ Wayne and that’s all in the span of 2 months. If we can get these artists to team up and stop saying the N word in their songs and just throw in different names of college players, the popularity will grow ex-po-nen-tial-ly!

If Flau’jae keeps this up, you might not ever see your local college offering free tickets to the women’s game again.

Samantha Williams, Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at University of Tennessee

Coaches & TikTok

Recruiting today is not the recruiting of yesterday. Do you remember what it was like when you were in grade school and you would see your teacher at the grocery store, possibly even showing some leg? That is what it feels like seeing a coach on TikTok.

However, Samantha Williams, Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator for the University of Tennessee, is actually pretty funny. Check out her most recent TikTok here.

While it is strange that coaches are now almost doing whatever it takes to come off as relatable or funny to players in order to get their commitment, how far will too far be? I just pray that they don’t try too hard. If I were offer my 2 cents for these coaches I would recommend:

  1. Hire a college intern to run your social media for you. Have them film you asking you about recruiting, travel, coaching life, anything to get to know you, the game, and the school

  2. Film a day in the life of…this does #numbies every time. And your college intern working for free will edit for you

  3. Don’t try to understand TikTok. Post like a grandma/grandpa, one-take only, and click that post button

Does dieting really matter in college?

Back in the day, your diet did not matter in order to be good at a sport. You’re on your 7th grade A team, class ends at 4, you have a game at 6:30. What’s for dinner? Fried chicken and fries if your mom remembers to bring dinner or whatever the vending machine has in stock for the day. AAU is in season? You are eating concession stand food for 2 days in a row week over week.

Nowadays, these kids are gluten-free, dairy-free, fried-free, and sugar-free. It’s tasty? They can’t have it. Their dad has packed protein shakes for the both of them to eat during the next 2 days. All food will be consumed as liquid.

Diana Taurasi said it best during The Bird & Taurasi show last year during the Final Four. “Think about these kids…they’re working with personal trainers in college. I was pounding beers and cheeseburgers in college.” If Taurasi can become Taurasi on her college diet, I think these kids can tone it down a bit.
